Find Answers to Your Questions
Project Megaphone is a platform that encourages small business owners around the country to share their perspective about the impact of today’s economy on their business. Some answers will be public, i.e. business name, location, etc. while others will remain private to encourage honest perspectives, like capital concerns, local policy, etc. The public answers will be displayed on an interactive map. The private perspectives will be kept anonymous and aggregated as inputs into the intelligence dashboard. This allows small business owners and local policymakers to explore local business needs and sentiment. Responses are also aggregated by state and congressional districts and shared directly with policymakers, Chambers of Commerce and other representatives.
Help small business owners be heard so their communities can be better served.
Project Megaphone is sponsored by three mission-driven organizations, Community Reinvestment Fund, Small Business Majority, and Kanopy, a new data cooperative whose mission is to return the value of last-mile data to the communities that create it. Instead of Facebook and Google getting all the value out of your data and hollowing out main street, our goal is to offer tools that keep that value where it belongs: within the communities that create it.
This project is just the beginning for Kanopy and our partners. We will continue to create tools that enable small businesses, especially underserved small business owners, to get access to the resources and capital they need to grow and thrive -- creating the resilience and adaptability that will help uplift their neighborhoods and communities.
Most small business solutions focus on digitizing and optimizing an existing process, loan applications for example. Kanopy and our partner are starting with process optimization, education and advocacy, but our future is building a robust small business ecosystem built on intelligence derived from the local data owned and controlled by small businesses and their community members, not a gigantic company that doesn’t care about them.
Anyone can see your pin and public offers (i.e. discounts) to the community. You can consider this pin your virtual billboard flown in Kanopy’s cyberspace. Anyone driving by will be able to see it. This differs from the answers to the private questions (the ones asking about the state of your business). Answers to these private questions are anonymized, aggregated at a community level, and fed into the Sentiment Meter at a National, State and City level. These aggregated survey answers may also be shared with state and local representatives who want to understand how to better meet the needs of their communities in times like this.
The Sentiment Meter is meant to reflect the state of the community it represents. The meters are aggregated and anonymized responses to the private survey questions. For the gauges, we calculate the average response on the one to five scale (more specifically, we use the “mean”, for you statistician nerds among us) to arrive at a number for the community. This changes as each new pulse survey goes out to a group of community members.
